If you don't see any (comp) warnings on first startup you might just want to check that native compilation is working. The new native-compilation feature will churn through your startup Elisp and probably spew a ton of warnings, but eventually you'll notice that Emacs feels much zippier. If all goes well you should be able to start Emacs and (emacs-version) will report 28.1. If it matters, the Emacs version I installed was 27.0.50, on macOS 10.14.

The above steps will update your /Applications/Emacs.app in place, so if you had emacsclient in a different subdirectory (as I did) you may want to replace any symbolic links to the newly build version at /Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/bin/emacsclient. Information about installing Emacs from source on macOS seems to be surprisingly sparse, so putting it all here together for easy reference. Look into using the Windows subsystem for Linux or a VM.

Obviously having to type out the full path to the latest emacs app is not as convenient as just emacs. If this option is omitted then the regular windowed application will open rather than the ‘in line’ terminal version.

Note about Windows Support: While it is certainly possible to install MIT/GNU Scheme and edwin/emacs on Windows, we dont offer support for those systems. Note the -nw parameter passed to the emacs application, this tells emacs to launch in ‘no window’ mode. Once the installation has finished, you can start Emacs: You should be greeted with the default startup screen. This guide, provided by ErgoEmacs, provides everything you need to get up and running with a basic Emacs installation on Linux, Mac, or Windows.

These steps also apply the (optional) multi-tty patch that I've written about before. When you install Emacs, you have to consider your platform. Sudo rm -rf /Library/Developer/CommandLineToolsĪgain, something was wedged in the subsequent build process until I took this step, as recommeded in this GitHub thread. opt/homebrew/opt/texinfo/bin Install/re-install Xcode command-line tools Add makeinfo to pathĪdd this to your shell path (necessary so that the makeinfo provided by texinfo is seen before the older macOS-provided version). Also texinfo provides an updated makeinfo which is now no longer optional in the Emacs build process. I'm not sure why it was necessary to reinstall gcc (maybe an architecture issue?), but it seemed to help with a build error in a subsequent step. Overall the process seems much smoother than the pre-release build experience but as always YMMV. The Emacs Mac Port has been updated for Emacs 28.1 and here are the steps I used to build and install it on my M1 MacBook Air. This is an update of sorts to my previous Emacs build recipe and late-night Emacs-on-M1 twitter thread. Thank you.Upgrading to Emacs 28.1 on Apple Silicon (M1) Macs Perhaps there are some system files that would make a huge difference. I appreciate it if someone tells me if the emacs and ssh problems are related or independent, and how I can fix both of the problems. One can be a GTD-nerd, a writer of any kind, or just working. I note that our network is behind a firewall and both my Macbook Pro and the workstation have a proxy. With MacOS Catalina update, it is a headache as usual to getting Emacs to work seamlessly with the terminal or iTerm2, or the Finder. I can even run the proper emacs X11 on that machine. Interestingly, when I do "ssh -X" to a Linux computer outside the network, the X11 forwarding problem is not seen. On the workstation, emacs X11 (which was installed by sys admin) works without problem. A possibly related problem is "X11 forwarding request failed on channel 0" in response to "ssh -X" to a workstation on the same network (Mac Pro running El Capitan). bashprofilefile in my home directory so that my EDITORnow reads: export EDITOR'/Applications/Emacs. This problem is seen both on Terminal.app and XQuartz.app (version 2.7.8, as I heard 2.7.9 may not be compatible with emacs X11). There are some other blog posts about this that go into more detail, but in short, I had to go to System Preferences > Privacy > Full Disk Access > Add Emacs update my. I can run "emacs dummy.txt" (foreground), but this does not offer the functions that are available on the window launched as background.

On my Macbook Pro (late 2013) running El Capitan, I installed GNU emacs (X11), but "emacs dummy.txt & " does not open a window. There are many options for building emacs (such as whether to build for the X11 GUI or the Cocoa GUI), which are discussed in the INSTALL file.
